Simple Savoury Lasagna
My favourite savoury lasagna |
You'll need:
- An oven-safe pan several inches deep and long enough to accommodate the noodles (I used a tinfoil pan I bought at the dollar store, 29.8 cm long x 23.8 cm wide x 5.9 cm deep (11 3/4 in x 9 3/8 in x 2 5/16 in) and it was perfect!).
- 1 box of oven-ready lasagna noodles (I used Primo this time, but get whatever is on sale. Make sure it's oven ready)
- 1 package of grated Mozzarella cheese (probably 2.5 cups maybe)
- 20 smallish slices of pepperoni
- Sauce (see below)
The sauce:
- 2 jars of Classico pasta sauce (Roasted Garlic and Onion is nice, as is the Italian Sausage, Peppers and Onions, but any jar of the tomato sauces is good. But here, I definitely do recommend Classico brand, this is the best jarred pasta sauce I've ever had)
- 250 g (half a pound) of ground beef or pork (or don't bother if you don't want a meat sauce)
- 1 tsp Parsley
- 1 tsp Oregano
- 1 tsp Basil
- Black Pepper if you want
For the sauce, fry up the meat and drain the grease. Add the jars of sauce and stir, till it's warm. Add your spices to taste.
The lasagna:
Put a thin layer of sauce on the bottom of the pan. Then one layer of noodles (use three noodles across). Now more sauce, a few pieces of pepperoni, some cheese. Lay 3 more noodles, then sauce, pepperoni and cheese. Do this two more times (so you will have four layers of noodles, ending with cheese). Five layers seems too thick for me, three too skinny, so I go with four. Also - use a lot of sauce, the oven-ready noodles are real sauce-suckers. And, don't overdo the cheese. You don't want to end up constipated, right?
Cover the lasagna with tin foil (I put the reflective side down, but I don't really think it matters). Cook at 350 for 20 to 25 minutes or check your noodle package for instructions.
This lasagna is a favourite around here, and it is so easy to make. Hope you give it a try!
