Why I Meditate

I've been meditating - admittedly, off and on - for about twelve years. Sometimes I had been more off than on, and therefore I am definitely able to say: I am better when I've been meditating.

I have seen the difference; when I have stopped meditating for long periods of time, my world became skewed again, my mind a racing mass of dead-end wires short-circuiting like crazy. I see the difference when I meditate. Not just one day. Not just two days. But sustained, long-term (say, three weeks and more) meditation. My mind is quieter, my body healthier, and I perform tasks much more mindfully.

I will probably write a lot more on why I meditate, and resources I've found helpful, in a future post.

If you are just starting out, though, I highly recommend Mindfulness for Beginners by Jon Kabat Zinn (link opens in a new window). This is an excellent way to get started no matter your spiritual background, and I still use it occassionally because the guided meditations are so well done.
