However, it's less about the weight than this overall feeling of un-wellness. That's it - I simply feel un-well. Five years ago, I was biking or running almost daily, and was not eating processed food (not because I was awsomely strong willed - there simply is not the same glut of processed crap in small-town Japan as here, and lots of fresh fruit and veggies).
I have not found a magic pill, but I know that exercise, even a little, makes me feel a lot better - more calm, less anxious. Good nutrition does the same, and has the added benefit of creating a feeling of euphoria.
And - I know it sounds like a fad - but Intermittent Fasting (IF) is helpful, too. I've all but gone off the rails over winter - no exercise, family bags of All-Dressed Ruffles. Not good. Thanks to one of my favourite medical gurus, Dr. Mercola, I was reminded of IF and of Emotion Freedom Technique (EFT) tapping. I will not stay on an IF schedule, but a few weeks of 5:2 does help reset my system, and regular EFT helps with sugar and carb withdrawals.
