The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was the best book I've read in a long while. It gripped me pretty much from page one, joining Rachel (our main character) on her train ride, and inside her head.
One reviewer who did not enjoy this book commented that "everyone in the book is horrible". Hmm. I disagree. The people in this novel are people - flawed. We get inside of three characters' thoughts, and can see their angst, and understand their actions, their desires, their needs.
I would say that this is a novel best enjoyed by those who've had a bit of life experience, as we are the ones who will best empathize with the characters.
As for the mystery - this is a very well-crafted novel of suspense. Never quite sure if we can trust our narrator when the police themselves do not, we are wrong-footed a few times, and there are several possibilities that we have to sort out along with Rachel (the narrator).
This is not an annoying romantic thriller, it is not a cosy, and it is not a gore-fest.
I really loved this book and would recommend it to suspense lovers. The only reason I gave four stars instead of five is because there are a few little things I would have liked to see mentioned (we assume they were cleared up) at the end. I won't say what they were as I don't want to give any hint of a spoiler.
