As some readers may know, I have turned into a bit of a hiking maniac since meeting some like minded people in this Gatineau area. People who, as it happens, know the trails in Gatineau park quite well, and are happy to explore even further. As a result, I am quickly learning my way through, in and around the National Park.
This afternoon (August 19th), my friend JK and I did a lovely and challenging 7.5 km loop which encompassed the lovely, awesome, perfect little King Mountain loop. From P7 (on Kingsmere road in Chelsea) we took trails 30, 17, 23, then King Mountain trail. We then returned via trail 8 (by taking a right turn off of King Mountain just before the mountain loop met itself) and 30 again. I’ve posted a map below for convenience!
In any case – my assessment of this trail. It reminds me of Wolf trail in some ways, as it is narrow, steep, and rocky in many parts, especially on trail 17. It is not a gentle walk in the woods, and it is not a wide road – hence, this is my kind of trail! Also, this route provides a loop, which I prefer to an out-and-back trail. And, most awesomely, and unexpectedly on my part, we were treated to a wonderful view in several places over the Eardley Escarpment.
The only drawback to this particular route is that dogs are not permitted on the King Mountain trail section, so if you bring your buddy, you will have to skip the vistas. But the rest of the trail is a great hike in its own right anyway!
And, here’s a photo (Auto-Awsomed by Google!) taken from the lookout at King Mountain.
