Last Sunday (November 2nd, 2014), I went with my regular hiking Meetup group on yet another foray into Gatineau park. This park has A LOT of trails for hiking and biking (and then skiing and snowshoeing once the snow falls). There are also unofficial now-defunct trails as well, one of which I will post soon.
Anyway, as I was saying, awesome hike on Sunday on a super fun set of trails, forming a loop from P10, past Camp Fortune, up to the Keogan shelter and back.
From p10, we took trail #32 which starts right behind the dry toilet. There is one tricky part you have to watch for in the beginning – a sharp right turn. If you miss the turn, you will quickly find yourself on the road (you can see in my map that we at first did miss the turn). Trail 32 is rough and rocky and fun. You end up coming out of the woods on Fortune Parkway for about 50 metres, then back into the woods. Once you get to Camp Fortune, take trail #4, then right on trail #14. Finally, trail #1 until you get to Keogan shelter where you can stop for a pee-break and a lunch break!
Leaving Keogan, instead of heading back the same route, we took trail #11, which much be a winter trail as it’s not on my park map. Only take #11 a short way, then – get off the beaten track. Go over the green plastic mesh barrier (yes, the barrier that is trying to tell you not to go there!), and wend your way mostly straight, keeping the water always to your left. Soon, you will meet trail #9. Turn right, and follow #9 back to where it meets the 32.
I really, really enjoyed this hike, especially as the weather was perfect – brisk but sunny, witht he smell of autumn leaves wafting in the air.
